1835 N-15 R2 Head of 1836. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. CAC. Lustrous bluish steel brown with slightly faded mint red covering about 10% of the planchet, mostly on the obverse. The only marks are a small splash of darker olive brown toning at the dentils over star 9, a fine horizontal hairline in the field before the nose, and a faint hairline scratch at the left end of the line under CENT. The surfaces are satiny and this cent has excellent eye appeal. MDS. The fields are lightly flowlined on both sides and the small chip die defect under the right side of the 3 is faint but still visible. There is a clear double profile on the forehead, upper lip, and chin, plus minor doubling on a couple of the stars (all from die bounce or shift). Softly struck on the brow lock and along the front edge of the nose. Called MS65 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS63 and tied for CC#1, his photo #28777. Our grade is MS63. 1835 N-16 R2 Head of 1836. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Very attractive frosty light bluish steel and olive with traces of mellowed mint red in protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are lustrous and nearly flawless, and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The best identifying marks are two tiny specks of lighter golden toning near the hair under stars 6 & 7. E-MDS with microscopic radial die flowlines in the fields. In addition there is a strong double profile from the forelock down to the chin with additional doubling on many of the stars. Graded MS63 and tied for CC#1 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #28699. Bland says MS60+ and tied for CC#1. Our grade is MS63. Comes with a nice provenance. The only marks are two tiny planchet chips near the dentil tips over star 11 (as struck). Essentially a flawless cent, but the color is a bit darker than you like for a choice piece. MDS with a die crack through OF AMERICA. The repunching on the base of the E in STATES is clear. Our grade is MS60+. 1836 N-6 R2. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. CAC. Lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with traces of faded mint red in protected areas, especially on the obverse. The left third of the reverse is a darker shade of chocolate brown. Just a few trivial marks including a light nick at the top of the nostril and a faint hairline scratch from the nose into the field under star 4. Very sharply struck E-MDS with the usual cud break above star 8 plus a fine die crack through the end of the wreath ribbon. Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS65BN (PCGS label #1726.65/60110285 included, and it shows the Joshua and Ally Walsh provenance). Our grade is MS62+. A very nice example of the "Gobrecht Head" variety of 1836 cents (seen only on the N-6 & N-7 varieties). The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Unbroken satiny mint luster covers this cent, even the highpoints of the devices, and the eye appeal is outstanding. The only marks, and they are trivial, are microscopic specks of darker toning (not carbon) scattered over the obverse, none notable. Otherwise this cent would qualify as a gem. MDS with die cracks on both sides. The die line connecting the bases of the I & T in UNITED is gone. Our grade is MS63+, close to MS64. A superior example of the only Plain Hair Cord/Small Letters variety of 1837; as such an important piece for every "Redbook" registry collection. 1848 N-31 R3. PCGS graded MS-64+ Brown. Highly lustrous bluish steel brown and light olive with generous traces of faded mint color showing in protected areas on the reverse. A beautiful cent, virtually flawless, with unbroken satiny mint frost covering the obverse. The obverse is a solid gem while the reverse is not quite as impressive by comparison since it doesn't have the same blast of luster. But the reverse is flawless otherwise. The best identifying marks are a microscopic tick on the throat and a speck of darker toning over the E in CENT. Very attractive lustrous light bluish steel brown with generous traces of mellowed mint red remaining visible on both sides, especially on the reverse. 1857 N-1 R1 Large Date. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. CAC. Attractive glossy medium steel brown and light chocolate with generous traces of mint red remaining visible on both sides. No spots or stains. The only notable marks are a small tick in the center of the neck, a few small rim nicks at stars 11-13, and a few more tiny rim nicks at MER. LDS, die state b. The stray digits in the dentils below the 18 and the die lines over NI in UNITED are gone. Our grade is MS60+. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1857 N-2 R1+ Small Date. PCGS graded MS-63 Red & Brown. Frosty mellowed mint red fading to steel brown with at least a third of the planchet showing mint color. The only marks are a tiny rim nick at star 13 and another at TA in STATES. MDS, die state a late. Some of the die lines over UNIT are still visible. Sharply struck except for minor weakness on the coronet over LI (which comes weakly struck on this variety, even on the finest known examples). Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#2 with several other examples in the Grellman census. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1857 N-4 R1 Small Date. PCGS graded MS-63 Red & Brown. CAC. Lustrous bright original mint red just starting to fade to steel brown on the highpoints, 90% of the original color remaining. The notable marks are a small splash of light chocolate toning near the hair under star 7 and a couple tiny spots of dark steel toning at the stem end. The coronet tip is not fully struck and there are very shallow low spots inside the wreath caused by minor debris stuck on the die. Otherwise this cent is a solid gem. MDS, die state b. The fine die line from star 1 to the dentils at the left is gone but the short point down from the bottom of the inner segment of the hair bun is clear. A beautiful example of the small date version of our final year of large cent production. Called MS65 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #31568. Graded MS70 by Ted Naftzger, and it was housed in a PCGS holder graded MS64RB when we sold it in our sale of the Naftzger late date cents (9/7/2009:1303). Our grade is MS64+, close to MS65, and CC#1 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 5 finer: 4 in 64, 1 in 65.
